Max was born and raised in Peoria, IL, but moved to Chicago when he was 11. Lakeview East, to be exact. A good neighborhood just walking distance away from the Lakefront Trail. The oldest of three, Max always found it to be his responsibility to be the caretaker of his siblings. That mentality stemmed from always seeing his father take care of his mother -- a duty that would eventually fall onto his shoulders.

His childhood was modest. He was enrolled in public school for the entirety of his educational career and played youth football up until he reached junior high. That’s when his growth spurt begun. His dad decided it’d be best for him to switch to basketball -- maybe that would keep kids from bullying him about how abnormally tall he was for his age.

It was freshman year of high school when things started to go from an average life into something of a nightmare. His mother had been in and out of rehab for alcohol addiction for the duration of his childhood, but it wasn’t until his teens when he really understood what was actually going on. His dad had done a pretty good job at hiding it up until that point.

On the morning of his 14th birthday, Max woke to the sounds of screaming and broken glass. It was an argument unlike anything he’d ever witnessed before. He forced a lot of the memory from that day out of his head, but one image that remains with him is that of his mother being carried out in handcuffs, piss drunk and crying while his father clenched his face, blood peeking out from beneath his hand.

That’s when Max had to grow up, and fast. He quit all of his extra curricular activities so he could take care of his brother and sister while their dad was busy trying to mend a shattered relationship with his wife, but sadly to no avail. Max’s only job was to be the distraction. He played with his siblings, helped them with their homework, cleaned the house, and cooked -- that’s where he found his love for the culinary arts. It seemed to be the only way for him to find solitude amongst the burden of playing a parent at such a young age.

It was at the age of 18 when he acquired his first job and, of course, it was at a restaurant. Even though he was just bussing tables, he enjoyed being around food. During his breaks he’d stand in the kitchen and watch in fascination as the chefs and line cooks worked.

eventually, he got promoted to cooking on the line, but no matter how hard he tried Max still wasn’t making enough to help make ends meet - unable to work the amount of hours It took to make a good paying. That’s when he reconnected with Darnell. A guy from Max’s childhood, not much older than he. Darnell approached him with the opportunity to “make enough money to keep your family fed and finally be able to live out that chef life you've always dreamed about” -- that was all Max needed to hear.

The money laundering was the easy part. The hard part was deflecting all of the questions his father had about where the sudden jump in income came from -- how he could afford the food truck that appeared out of nowhere. Max was never the best liar, no matter how hard he tried, so that’s when it ended. His father cut ties with him as soon as he found out about his son's involvement with the number one drug ring in Chicago.

Freshly divorced and enraged by Max’s life choices, his father packed up what was left of the family and moved to a suburb of the city. Max was left to his own devices. That’s when he made the decision to attempt to rekindle the broken relationship with his mother. She was all he had left.

He visited her every day whether it was in jail, in the hospital, or in rehab. He used any money he had to help pay for her bills, food, and place to stay. She was on the way to recovery; four months sober. He was convinced that he was finally going to get the mother he never had.

It was the evening of his 23rd birthday when it happened. His mom wanted to come to his apartment, to do something nice for him since he’d done more than enough for her. But he couldn’t. There was a big drop of money that he needed to wait for.

He tried getting out of it, to convince Darnell to take care of it for him, but Nia didn’t trust anyone else with that amount of cash . . . so Max cancelled on her; his own mother. Sometimes he can still hear the last words she ever said to him. “Oh, okay . . . another time then.”

➞ SEASON ONE. Overall a very nice, even tempered guy who is unfortunately neck deep in some really serious shit. In this verse he works in his food truck that also happens to be a front for the city’s major drug ring. ( He bought the food truck with financial help from the ring ) As a debt, he cleans money for them every other day.

➞ SEASON two. Max does some time in prison and gets stabbed. The only reason he gets out is under terms of information on the drug ring. His personality is a bit more hardened in lieu of the events at the end of the season, including his breakup with Murphy.

➞ SEASON three. Max is on the run with murphy, jess, and felix. they all acquire fake IDs and flee to canada. max arrives in winnipeg, determined to start a new life as a line cook under the alias "Kyle Green"

➞ PRE-SERIES. ( age 20 - 27 ) exploring max's life post - high school leading into the big shift in his life that comes after his mother's death.

➞ TEEN. ( age 13 - 19 ) exploring all of max's adolescence leading up to the events of season 1. mostly focused on his home life and how he's dealing with the dynamic between himself, his parents, his siblings and all of the responsibilities that are connected to those relationships.

➞ APOCALYPSE. Everything that happens in his main verse is also canon here which means the outbreak occurs post-S2. Max flees Chicago on his own deciding to leave murphy and crew behind. ( mostly imagined in TWD, but can be treated as a general apocalypse verse )

➞ WIZARDING WORLD. [ extremely anti-jkr ] max is a mudblood from north america who gets sent to live with his aunt, who is a witch, in oxford, england. she enrolls him in hogwarts and he gets sorted into gryffindor. ( verse will take place post-war in max's 6th & 7th years unless otherwise specified ) more info here*

➞ THE MAGICIANS. his biography still applies to this verse, but as far as show canon goes, the only thing that's relevant is that he cleans money for a drug ring. He recieves his Brakebills letter right before he gets too deep into Nia's business and believes this is the universe granting him a "fresh start" on life. He is full of excitement upon beginning his studies, but Max's attitude immediately falters when he starts struggling with his abilities ( psychic / traveler ). He doesn't handle hearing people's thoughts well and seeks advice from Dean Fogg who tells him his powers are rare and directs him to be mentored by Penny. His discipline is physical magic, therefore he stays in the physical kid's cottage and is aware of most of the main characters. Margo and Eliot have chosen to take him under his wing.

➞ THE HUNGER GAMES. a resident of district 6, although has nothing to do with the designs or operations of transportation. instead, max is responsible for helping feed the district along with his sister while his father is the one actually working in the industry as a train operator. max's younger brother is deceased in this verse - a fallen tribute in the game he participated in. max's mother is still deceased in this verse too, but this time succumbing to her morphling addiction due to her need to forget what happened to her son. unfortunately, max is slowly heading down a similar path - eager to use morphling to help numb the pain of losing two family members. he is the most willing to help katniss on her quest to take down the capitol after his district gets bombed by their air forces.

➞ THE OLD GUARD / IMMORTAL. ( heavily affiliated with @hermarks ) this takes place post season 2 of In The Dark, so everything that happened in the show so far is canon. there is no direct affiliation with the events that occur in TOG when it comes to the plot. max becomes aware of his immortality when on the run. he chooses not to meet up with murphy, jess, and felix when they decide to flee chicago together. instead, he decides to take off on his own. sam, who wants vengeance for nia’s death, tracks max down and kills him via bullet to the head. she wraps his body and disposes it in lake michigan only for him to come to while underwater. it’s when his body washes onto shore beneath an overpass that max frees himself and tries to figure out what’s going on.

➞ FEAR STREET '78. max is a counselor at camp nightwing to earn extra money to help with his family situation at home. he is responsible for general recreational help and occasionally leads the camp's music program. every once in awhile he'll try to sneak into the kitchen.

➞ FEAR STREET '94. years after the incident at camp Nightwing, max works as a line cook at a local restaurant as a means to keep himself occupied while trying to move on from the nightmares that still haunt him from that day.

➞ MIDNIGHT MASS. takes place post s3. max decides to retreat to Crockett island in an effort to get away from the endless cycle of drama he always seems to be trapped in while staying in Chicago. he's there hoping to gain a fresh start only to find that the island increases his bad habits tenfold. living there causes him to spiral into a bout of alcoholism and depression — every day increasingly showing more signs that he's going down the same path his mother went down before her untimely death.
